Jesus? Not so much the reason for the season.
I hate the phrase “War on Christmas” too, and it doesn’t have anything to do with the history of how Christmas has been celebrated over the years. It has everything to do with Freedom of Religion and not imposing religious views on others.
I’m a Christian, so I tend to default to saying Merry Christmas. This is because I hope that they have a good day that day, whether or not they celebrate it or not. I am working hard to say Happy Holidays instead so I can be more respectful of everybody else, but we all know how habits can be hard to break. And I sure am not going to be upset if someone wishes me Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas.
And therein lies the difference. If someone wishes me a Merry Christmas, it is because that is their default, and I respect that by wishing them the same. If I am initiating the holiday wishes, I will say Happy Holidays because I don’t know what their default is. If I did, I would use it. But apparently, being open-minded and ensuring that you don’t make assumptions about other people’s religious belief isn’t done? Not in keeping with the spirit of the holiday, or something? *eyeroll*
